GREENIE #3

Erin of DinnerTimeChimes is a super recycler and reuser. The windchimes, birdhouses, and other goodies are made from fantastic finds from estate sales, thrift stores, and yard sales. I love their special theme gift boxes!

1. When did you decide to start making eco-friendly stuff and what triggered your going green? The windchimes started out as a way of having something fun to make with my dad and to also give me something to hunt for at flea markets. Over the years, it's turned into 'what can I make out of these?' thrift hunts for silverplate and anything that I think will work as a bird house. 2. What recycled, reused, or eco-conscious materials do you typically use? What is your favorite? My primary focus is the windchimes, which are created from silverplated silverware. Since I reuse any and all silverplate that I can fine, sometimes all the scrubbing and polishing gets to be too much! I love making the birdhouse from boots and kitchen cooking pots. They're each so different and allow me to use my imagination more.

3. What non-art or craft related things do you try to do to lead an eco-savvy life?I'm big on recycling in general. It's unbelievable how much trash you create in day's time! It only takes few extra minutes to toss the recyclables into another container to save them from being buried in your town's dump. Our entire state is in the middle of a drought, and has been for so for quite some time now, so I'm also very conscious about water usage.

4. What is the one thing you wish people would do more of to contribute to the green cause?I wish that more people would put a little more thought into their trash. Trash shouldn't be thrown out your window to end up in the streams. Recycling just the basics from your home will greatly reduce your trips to the dumpster/landfill. Also, items that can be used by others shouldn't be trashed. Thrift stores, donation centers, etc. all collect these items and will either see that they've given to a person in need or sell them to make money for their cause.

5. Do you have a green hero? Artist or environmentalist or just uber-eco friend? The EcoEtsy (http://ecoetsy.blogspot.com) street team on Etsy continues to amaze me. Only a few are living off-grid, yet the entire team is constant source of inspiration. I am amazed at how they reduce, reuse, and recycle in both their crafts and their packaging.
